Traffic officer nabbed for demanding bribe
Updated | By News24
The Road Traffic Management Corporation says a Klerksdorp traffic officer has been arrested today for allegedly soliciting a bribe from an undercover officer.
Spokesperson Simon Zwane says the incident happened on Leemhuis Street next to the Oleander Park old age home, where he was conducting a speed law enforcement operation.
"The traffic officer allegedly demanded a R150 bribe from an undercover agent after stopping the agent for exceeding the speed limit and driving without a driving licence," he says.
The officer is expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
This is the second traffic officer to be arrested for soliciting bribes since the start of the festive season road safety campaign.
A Tshwane metro police officer was also arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe from an undercover officer on the Moloto road in December.
The man allegedly asked for a R100 bribe from an undercover officer monitoring the conduct of his colleagues, Zwane says.
It was part of an operation by the RTMC's national anti-corruption unit.
The unit has been at work countrywide to ensure that officers and motorists obey the law, says Zwane.
