The officers came under fire while responding to an ATM robbery at the Bridge City shopping centre in the early hours of this morning.

Police spokesperson Jay Naicker says four suspects have been arrested.

"A follow-up operation was conducted at a clinic nearby where four suspects were arrested. One of the suspects was injured and was receiving treatment and he remains under police guard," he said.

Naicker says the three other arrested suspects were then taken to a KwaMashu police station where the drama continued.

"Whilst at the police station they had attempted to remove a firearm from one of our police officers, during the scuffle one of the suspects was fatally wounded.

"We also recovered three vehicles that were used by the suspects during the robbery. The Hawks have now taken over the investigation. The shooting incident at KwaMashu police station has been reported to the IPID," he said.

A manhunt has been launched for the other suspects involved in the robbery and shooting. Police could not confirm at this stage the number of people on the run.
