The SAHRC holds talk on upholding human rights online

The South African Human Rights Commission says it is crucial for society to be aware of the role the Internet plays in both the upholding and violation of people's rights.
The commission is leading a three-day dialogue in Johannesburg with human rights institutions from other parts of Africa.

The Commission's Gail Smith, explains what they are trying to achieve with the roundtable.
"What we are trying to understand as Human Rights Commission who are responsible for human rights, is how we can promote and protect human rights online. Different countries are all going through similar things with respect to online hate speech, xenophobia and a whole range of human rights abuse basically. It's also on how we respond to human rights violations online," she said.
