Stun grenades fired outside Parliament
Updated | By Troye Lund
Striking parliamentary support staff have continued to bring sittings of the National Assembly and Committee meetings to a standstill for a third day.
They have stormed several committee meetings this morning, notably a sitting by the Portfolio Committee on Police.
The employees, who are members of Nehawu, have downed tools demanding bigger performance bonuses.
Riot police have fired stun grenades at workers on the steps of Parliament in an attempt to have them leave the premises.
Protestors wearing a variety of trade union and African National Congress t-shirts, including some with President Jacob Zuma’s face on them feel that the executive is spending money everywhere except remunerating administrative staff in the legislature.
Parliament is a national key point which means that protests in the precinct are not allowed.
While police and Office bearers in parliament appear to be treading carefully and not taking any action to remove the protestors, the question is how long the protest will be allowed to continue before action is taken.
Opposition parties have accused the ANC of handling one of its key trade union partners with kid gloves for fear of alienating this constituency.
