Student leaders fail to show for meeting with UKZN management
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The meeting between UKZN management and the SRC - which was expected to take place today following protests that erupted at the institution's Pietermaritzburg campus - has failed to materialize.
Earlier today, students at the campus violently demonstrated over issues including financial aid and possible fee increases for 2017.
The university's Lesiba Seshoka says an urgent meeting was then called, but student representatives failed to attend - instead demanding the release of those arrested during the protests.
“We will – as a university – open Pietermaritzburg campus for students to go and study. And we will put adequate security and the public order police – beyond the guard – so that whoever behaves in a manner that is not acceptable, who commits violence and intimidates others – is arrested.”
Seshoka says classes will resume tomorrow. KZN police say no students were arrested.
