Speeding is the cause of 30% of road accidents: RTIA
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Around 14 000 people lose their lives to road accidents in KZN each year.
That's according to figures revealed by Japh Chuwe, the registrar of the Road Traffic Infringements Agency, during the National Traffic Indaba at the Durban ICC yesterday.
The indaba kicked off on Monday and wraps up today.

Various talks were being held on road safety and how to avoid getting a run-in with law enforcement officials.
Chuwe says speed is the cause of 30% of all road accidents.
He presented the stats to officers from across the country saying that said traffic officials are also guilty of breaking the rules of the road.
"How many times do you see our own officers driving and talking on the cellphones. What about failing to wear a seatbelt and getting off the road to by-pass traffic jams? We also fall into the trap of abusing our privilege and our power. Now and then officers go over the shoulder lines even though we know there is no emergency and they're not doing anything to improve the traffic flow just because they have a blue light," he said.
