Six-year-old girl fighting for her life in hospital
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
A six-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head at the Shakaskraal taxi rank, on the north coast, this morning.
One other person was hurt and taken to hospital.
Reports from the scene are that the little girl was shot after a security guard's firearm accidentally discharged.
IPSS Medical Rescue Paul Herbst says medics who responded to the incident were redirected to a local clinic where bystanders had taken the injured.
"The girl was shot in the head [and] in a critical condition. She was treated by IPSS Medical Rescue's advanced life support paramedics.
"She was intubated and placed on a ventilator before being rushed through to a local hospital. A second woman also sustained quite a significant amount of injuries to her face due to the shrapnel," he said.
Police however are investigating a case of attempted murder and have arrested a suspect.
