School violence under the microscope following Forest High stabbing
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
With this week being Child Protection Week, the Social Development Department says one of the issues receiving attention is violence at schools.
On Monday, a Grade 10 learner in Gauteng died after being stabbed - allegedly by two Grade 8 pupils.
Social Development's spokesperson, Lumka Oliphant, says they will use this week to highlight policy framework that's in line with the Children’s Act and the Child Justice Act.
"Even if children are offenders - as the Department of Social Development, we will have to make sure there are programmes where their rights are protected. We will take them to children's centres where they are assessed whilst we don't compromise on their development."
