SADTU pleads with new KZN govt to focus on improving schools

The South African Democratic Teachers Union in KZN has asked the new local government to focus on improving schools and supporting teachers.

"It must be committed to flying the flag high, but it will only be able to do that if workers like teachers and support staff are motivated. Also, they must engage the premier to remove the moratorium on the appointment of security guards and cleaners," says SADTU's Nomarashiya Caluza.

Sipho Hlomuka was appointed Education MEC this week under a new governing coalition for KZN.
Caluza says funding for resources, filling teacher vacancies, and improving school security should be the top priorities.

"We are aware that very soon he will be presenting the budget, and our call is that the MEC must prioritise teaching and learning and support that must be given to schools so that, as the province of KwaZulu-Natal, we can continue with the good performance we currently have."
