SA won't exit ICC, says legal expert
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A legal expert doubts South Africa will pull out of the International Criminal Court.
"I really don't believe that they would follow through on that and they had plenty of time to do that if they intended to do so. The repercussions are pretty high because it would make us outsiders in many spheres of diplomacy and international relations," he said.
Malcolm Lutge has been commenting after the Supreme Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed the State's appeal against a High Court ruling that government's failure to arrest Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir was inconsistent with its constitutional duties.
Lutge says South Africa was obliged to arrest Al-Bashir because of the country's ICC membership.
The ICC wants him to stand trial for crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes in Darfur.
