RFA: Constant truckers strike threat ‘cannot continue’

The Road Freight
Association says the truck protest by the All SA Drivers group is yet another
example of how the logistics chain is continuously threatened.

There were some disturbances on various routes over the long weekend, with reports that some drivers who did not want to participate in the protest were intimidated into parking their trucks on the road.
Police were on hand to stop any violence. It's understood the issue is the hiring of foreign nationals as drivers in the sector.
RFA CEO Gavin Kelly says while there were no major delays caused, these blockades have long-term, negative consequences for the logistics supply chain and the economy.

“We cannot have these sorts of things happening. There are structures that are put in place to deal with those parties, both representing employees and employers that meet the requirements of registration with the Department of Labour and Employment that are compliant, and that are partied to the Bargaining Council at the National Bargaining Council for the road freight logistics sector.
“We cannot continue to have anybody who represents somebody coming along and then suddenly changing the whole landscape."
