A large number of streets were left in the dark after an explosion at the local substation on Friday.

"Residents have been hard hit. It is that time of the month when our pensioners have just bought their groceries and stocked up their freezers. People on grants have done the same. People who can't afford to pay for their groceries or even their utility bills have been forced to throw out their groceries," said Ward 23 Councillor, Alicia Kissoon.

"Our businesses depend on the community that surrounds them, and they have to provide for them and when businesses are running on a generator, that means they're already paying too much."

Several cable faults were also subsequently reported.

eThekwini Municipality technicians began restoring power to areas on Tuesday afternoon.

Kissoon says a handful of streets are still without power.

She says the issue is linked to infrastructure problems.

"They fail to mention that it's over a dozen cable falls in a period of two to three days, which is in one community. That is a serious issue, and we need to start looking at what are we doing to maintain our infrastructure to avoid these problems."
