R23m set aside for social work employment in KZN

A total of R23 million has been set aside for the employment of social work graduates in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Department of Social Development in the province says almost a thousand social workers have started serving their four-month contract with the department.
Their areas of focus include gender-based violence and unemployment.
HOD Nelisiwe Vilakazi says they are relying on the graduates to provide much-needed psychosocial support to families affected by gender-based violence.
"We have ensured that 80 social work graduates that are allocated per district.
"One other challenge that we have is that the social ills that we have in our communities are escalating day by day.
"They will be addressing the issues of ensuring that they run the social behaviour change programmes such as psychosocial support programmes to offer vulnerable children and issues of GBV."
