R19m pumped into water repairs in Ugu District

KZN Cogta has injected R19 million in grant funding into the Ugu District Municipality as part of efforts to improve its provision of water within the District.

The rollout of the grant follows an assessment of the water infrastructure done by technicians in the district which has faced severe water challenges.
According to a report tabled by the municipality, water demand exceeds supply across all the water systems within the district.

Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says the municipality has proposed a mix-use approach in boreholes, spring protection, rainwater harvesting and desalination as methods to improve water supply.
"The money will be used to repair the Bhobhoyi Water Scheme at St Helen's Rock which requires major upgrades to the tune of R15 million."
He says the rest of the grant is for the drilling of 12 boreholes in the uMuziwabantu and Mzumbe Local municipalities.
"Through the rollout of the grant, the department aims to stabilize the provision of water within the district which has faced severe water constraints."
