"Violence against women has become more than a national crisis. It has become a crime against our common humanity," said Ramaphosa.

The President addressed the nation last night after mounting calls by people across the country for government-led action against sexual and gender-based violence.

South Africa's been reeling from a string of child and women murders in recent days.

Ramaphosa says the calls for action and justice have been heard.

"The women of our country are calling for emergency measures to end this violence. I will therefore be asking Parliament to discuss and identify urgent emergency interventions that can be implemented without delay," he said.

The country has been rocked by numerous cases of rape, murder and kidnappings and disappearances this week.

In KwaZulu-Natal, four children were killed, allegedly by their father in the Wyebank and New Germany areas, west of Durban on Tuesday.

The suspect, Sibusiso Mpungose made his first appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court today.

He is accused of murdering 4-year-old Kuhlekonke, 6-year-old Khwezi and 10-year-old Sphesihle Mpungose and 16-year-old Ayakha Jiyane.

Police are also searching for 23-year-old Natasha Conabeer, who was last seen leaving her Florida Road flat about two weeks ago. Her family is making a desperate plea for her safe return.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa is visiting the family of Uyinene Mrwetyana in the Eastern Cape today. Mrwetyana was raped and murdered, allegedly by an employee of the South Africa Post Office in Cape Town.
