Pongola crash: KZN Education says lacking transport budget

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal says while it does provide transport for over 6 000 pupils in the province - there is a demand for well over 100 000 children.
Head of Department Nkosinathi Ngcobo visited the horrific crash site in Pongola on Monday, where 20 people, 18 of which were children died.
He says currently, the department is faced with budget constraints and therefore cannot meet all school transport demands.

"Because of the vastness of the province and the typography of the province, you do find that there are a number of learners who actually qualify to get learner transport, but who are not getting it because of the budget of the province that we are facing.
"Within what we have we are continually trying to add to the number of buses."

The driver of the truck which rammed into the bakkie that the primary school children appeared at Pongola Magistrate's Court on 20 counts of culpable homicide on Monday.
