Police probe related incidents in Durban rock-throwing case

KwaZulu-Natal authorities are investigating whether a 26-year-old man taken to court over two recent rock-throwing incidents could be involved in other similar attacks in Durban.

Nkosinathi Mthalane was charged with malicious damage to property by the Durban Magistrate's Court yesterday. 

He was arrested on Saturday after construction workers saw a man throwing rocks from Durban's Tollgate Bridge onto vehicles on the N3 freeway.

A bakkie and a car were hit in those incidents.

Both drivers escaped unharmed.
 

"We will profile the suspect to see if he is linked to other incidents where stones have been thrown at vehicles in other areas,"  said the police's Nqobile Gwala. 

The matter is due back in court on Monday.

Several rock-throwing attacks in and around the Greater Durban area have sparked fear in many motorists.

Two siblings were killed when a boulder smashed into the vehicle they had been travelling in on the N2 near Ballito late last year.
