"There were two members in the helicopter, both of them escaped with very minor injuries. There is currently an investigation being conducted," said Naidoo.

"We will await the outcome of the investigation and a detailed report, from which we will be able to make an assessment on what exactly caused the crash."

The extent of the damage to the aircraft is unknown.

Some Facebook users who commented on the original story shared on the Newswatch page said how happy they were to hear that no one was seriously hurt.

Others explained how the crash occurred close to their homes.

One user said the occupants were lucky the helicopter did not crash onto the nearby M4 Ruth First Highway.

The busy highway, linking areas like Ballito, Umdloti and Umhlanga to the Durban city centre, runs parallel to the Virginia Airport.
