'Only a fraction' of nurdles collected on KZN beaches
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Less than 5% of the 'nurdles' that were swept into the sea during the severe Durban storm in October have been recovered.

Listen to one of the organisers of the nurdle clean-up, Caroline Reid below.
Reid says there are many hands at work to collect the plastic pellets that entered the water after a container was blown from a ship in the Durban harbour.
"We've recovered a small fraction of what was lost - that's the scary part. Not even 5% of what they are admitting to. Whas been recovered to get to the remote beaches. We're mobilising more people. Local and government bodies have been great in mobilising crews," she says.

The 'nurdles' have washed up on beaches from the KZN north coast to the Eastern Cape. The pellets can absorb pollutants and could cause a health risk if they enter the food chain.
