'On life support' - Batohi shares NPA concerns with Scopa
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
National Prosecution Authority (NPA) head Shamila Batohi has told MP’s the rule of law in South Africa is on life support.

She briefed Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) on Tuesday on cases referred to the prosecutions authority by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).
Batohi says most of the matters create the impression they are ready for prosecution.
"That is not the case. In as much as the work of the SIU is very important in terms of the length between the work that they did and and the criminal investigations that must follow, its really important.
"Basically, what we do in the NPA is we forward these matters to the DPCI (Hawks) to investigate."

Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Rodney de Kock says some matters are on court rolls.
"According to the information I have received - 41 guilty pleads, there are 23 other accused in court and there are eight warrants of arrests that had been authorised and in the NPA environment currently two matters are currently with us for decision.
"So again a reflection that the bulk of the matters are under investigation and currently there are two matters that are being attended to by prosecutors for decision."
