NUM backs Numsa's nationwide engineering strike
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) are rallying in support of a salary hike for hundreds of thousands of workers in the metal and engineering industries.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) workers have threatened to down tools across the country on Tuesday if their demand for an 8% pay rise isn't met.
Employers are offering 4.4%.
Now, mineworkers union NUM has thrown its weight behind Numsa's campaign.
Mawonga Madolo, the metal sector coordinator, says over the past year many employees have had their salaries and working hours slashed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
"It is our view that the 4.4% increase is not sufficient, taking into account the plight that the workers have suffered and sacrifices they have made to keep the industry afloat during the Covid-19 period.
"We are therefore calling on the employers to review their offer and come to the table with a reasonable offer in order to cap the looming strike."
