Nuclear Africa boss promotes positives of nuclear power plants
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The Chief Executive of Nuclear Africa has argued there are significant economic benefits for South Africa and job opportunities that could arise from the building of nuclear power plants.
The Energy Department has proposed several nuclear power plants by the year 2030 as an alternative source of power.
But there has been widespread opposition to government's R1-trillion Nuclear New Build Programme from environmental activists and some political parties who are worried about the environmental impact and the cost.
Speaking at the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry today - Kelvin Kemm said there are numerous scientific investigations that are conducted before a site for a plant is chosen.
"They look at the fauna, they look at the flora, the sea life, the sea current and to the disposition of people living around the areas.
"So, it's false when people imagine that somebody decides to put a cross on a piece of paper and say we'll use that site and we'll move in next week," he said.
