Nongoma Mayor awaiting plans for Zulu Queen's funeral arrangements

Nongoma Mayor Albert Mncwango says they're now waiting for formal communication from the Zulu royal family on plans for a final send-off for Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu.

The regent passed away on Thursday in a Johannesburg hospital. Her death followed that of her husband, King Goodwill Zwelithini last month.


It's been relatively quiet at the queen's royal palace of KwaKhangela as family elders continue to meet behind closed doors.

Mayor Mncwango says they're ready to assist as soon as they get word of what is required of them.


He says all non-essential services in the municipality have been suspended.


"Expect for those essential services we will continue with those and also our disaster team will remain on full alert. So such services will continue to rendered but all other programmes have been put on hold."


Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has confirmed in a statement that Premiere Sihle Zikakala has requested President Cyril Ramaphosa to grant a state funeral for the Zulu Queen.

"The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Sihle Zikalala confirms that on behalf of the Provincial Government and the people of KwaZulu-Natal, he has submitted a request to His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa for the granting of the state funeral to be determined by the Presidency in honour of the distinguished role played by the departed Regent of the Zulu Nation, Queen Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu," the statement read.
