NCR warns of new scam targetting debtors
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The National Credit Regulator's issued a warning about a new scam that appears to be targeting consumers desperate to get out of debt.
It says the scammers prey on those financially stressed, people who've borrowed too much and others who've applied for debt counselling.
The NCR's Zonke Majola says they're sent messages with offers of assistance via Whatsapp, email, fake websites and SMS.
She says their modus operandi is different to the fraudsters who ask consumers for upfront payments, and then vanish.
"They will tell you if you are applying for a loan put up a front fee before we issue a loan. They will tell you that this money will cover things like VAT, insurance.
"So it could be a variety of information that tries to deceive consumers that are not aware of the scams."
