Emergency first responders say they received calls about an explosion and robbery on the northbound carriageway, after Queen Nandi Drive, at around 5:30 a.m.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson says at this stage the area is a no-go zone.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a cash-in-transit vehicle had been attacked by alleged robbers with apparent explosives used. Paramedics assessed the occupants of the cash vehicle however fortunately they were not injured during the robbery."

The SAPS has closed the N2 northbound to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile motorists stuck on the N2 say hours have passed since they last moved.

This woman says she had a plane to catch.

"People have parked and are standing outside. A lot of passengers are leaving vehicles with their bags and walking. You can't even turn onto the southbound because it's just a hollow middle section and I don't know how long this is going to be closed for. I have missed my flight."

She says there is no other way to go.

"There is no alternative, where do you go? You can use the Ruth First Highway but that's if you knew at the onset but some people need to make use of this area, so I'm stuck between there."

"I'm stuck after Nandi Drive, for almost two hours now. I can see police lights from far. I've switched off my car as no one is moving."

A resident in Greenwood Park says she heard gunshots earlier.

"When I first heard multiple gunshots go off, the sound of like KRRR! KRRR! Then after that, it went quiet. Then five minutes later, I just heard a loud bang, or a huge explosion go off. That's when I knew something was going on."
