Police say they had been part of a gang that was involved in a robbery in Newcastle earlier.

Another source has told Newswatch the robbery was a cash-in-transit heist.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says police spotted the gang's four getaway vehicles on the R33 in Seven Oaks in Greytown which fitted the description of those involved in the robbery.

She says the suspects are said to have fired at police when they tried to stop them.

"The members retaliated, wounding five suspects. One is in a critical condition in hospital and two others sustained gunshot wounds to the legs. Three AK47s and two pistols were recovered from the suspects.

"Three vehicles were also recovered. A manhunt for the fleeing suspect who fled in the fourth vehicle is ongoing," she said.

She says one of the vehicles recovered was later found abandoned in Pinetown.

Road Traffic Inspectorate's Zinhle Mngomezulu says traffic in the area is affected.

"R33 in Seven Oaks near New Hanover is closed to traffic. The incident left a number of [cones] lying across the roadway. RTI has diverted traffic," she said.
