This after three men were shot and killed during a traditional event at Dalton Hostel in Durban yesterday.

One of them died instantly while the other two succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The department's Sipho Khumalo says this is the third such incident in as many weeks after deaths at traditional ceremonies in Hlabisa and KwaMaphumulo.

"We will be engaging with traditional leaders to see how they could develop protocol so that such events could take place peacefully but even in time the MEC says that the obligation is on those who are organising these events to ensure that police are informed in this event. In fact if they fail to do so they will be personally held responsible if anyone dies in these events," he said.

The police's Thulani Zwane says Umbilo police are investigating three cases of murder.

"The motive for their shooting is unknown at this stage and there have been no arrests made. We are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed the incident to come forward with information so we can do a follow-up and arrest those involved in the shooting," Zwane said.
