Margate residents rebuild after devastating rains
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Residents and disaster teams in Margate on Tuesday continued to sift through the debris and wreckage of damaged properties and infrastructure.
A powerful storm ripped through the KZN south coast on Sunday night, claiming the lives of at least five people, including a child.
Gillian Breytenbach, the chairperson of the Community Policing Forum in Hiberdene, said investigations are continuing.

She said disaster management officials are still trying to make sense of the scale of the loss:
“The CBD in the Margate area is badly damaged. The rain came down heavy and in a matter of a few minutes it looked like a freak storm. There were people asking for help, cars in the lagoon, the whole front side of the CBD area where the main beach is total damaged, the Wimpy is damaged. It was like a hurricane came through there."
Breytenbach said some areas don't have power.

"A lot of the areas don't have power. There's a power box that caught alight from the lightning."
KZN Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza said trauma counsellors are being sent to the victims' families to offer support. The department will also distribute food parcels.
