The 32-year-old man, whose identity is withheld to protect the identity of his sister, was sentenced in the Pinetown Regional Court last week.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the man had been arrested after his mother became suspicious.

"In June 2012 the mother suspected that her daughter was pregnant. She asked her whether or not she was with child and the teenager finally admitted that she was. She also told her mother that the father of the child was her brother," he said.

Zwane said that in an effort to hide the incestuous tryst, the suspect had threatened to kill his sister if she told anyone.

"A case of rape was immediately opened at Hillcrest police station for further investigation. Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit took over the investigation that led to the arrest of the accused," he said.
