Makro employees picket amid Black Friday frenzy
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
As thousands of consumers hit various stores for the start of Black Friday, the SA Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union warned that Makro workers across the country have embarked on a picket at stores and will do so for two days.
The union's spokesperson Sithembele Tshwete says they and Massmart are in an ongoing wage dispute.
"The dispute arises out of the fact that we haven't been able to agree with Makro on the 12% or R900 increase that we have demanded."

"They have offered us R300, which is something that our members at Makro are not able to live with in terms of sustaining themselves as well as their family and extended family."
Massmart's Brian Leroni says they have been aware for the past eight weeks of the intended strike and have put contingency plans in place.

"It also appears, in our opinion, to be little support for the picking action amongst SACCAWU members in the affected Makro stores.
"We have, however, implemented contingency plans at these stores and this includes the deployment of experienced temporary staff."
