Residents believe it was caused by a spark from the explosion and subsequent fire at the Engen refinery this morning.

The building is a stone's throw away from the facility.

The woman and the children suffered some burns and smoke inhalation.

Their neighbour - Lerche Smith says a cloud of smoke from the refinery fire wafted towards their block of flats.

"Once the smoke from there settled on the roof of my neighbour's flat and something in the smoke and went into the bedroom and that's when the fire started. My place is just the walls and the ceiling that got damaged."

Engen says an investigation will be launched into the explosion its Wentoworth refinery that rocked the Durban south area this morning.

Several people suffered smoke inhalation and were treated by medics.

Engen's Thandeka Cele says the probe into the cause of the blast won't be an internal one. " We are part of big group called Petronas. I'm sure they will bring experts to do the investigation in terms of what transpired in the refinery."

Engen has confirmed that they have launched an investigation into the explosion that occurred at its refinery in Wentworth, south of Durban this morning.

They say their emergency response team was activated who successfully put out the massive fire around 9am.

Engen’s Thandeka Cele says Engen will also assist the families that’s homes were affected by the blast at a local block of flats.

Cele says at this stage, they do not know what caused the blast.
