The N3 Toll Concession says authorities are working to convince protesting truck drivers, at Van Reenen's Pass, to move their vehicles off the road.

Dozens of irate drivers parked their vehicles on both sides of the N3 earlier.

The concession's Con Roux has given this advice to people who're planning on travelling to the area.

"Our advice to motorists at this point in time - until there's a resolution of the matter, is to please avoid travel to the area. If travel is essential to use an alternative route such as the R74," Roux said.

Traffic heading towards Johannesburg is now being diverted via the N11 - through Newcastle and the R74, near Bergville, while those coming to Durban are being diverted at the R74 via Ladysmith.

These motorists managed to avoid the traffic.

The KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate's Zinhle Mngomezulu says officers on the ground understand the protest to be over wages and the employment of foreign truck drivers.

"South African drivers are demanding a living wage from their employers. It's indeed strike action. They don't want foreign drivers to work in South Africa as drivers - they feel that they accept any amount that's given to them," Mngomezulu said.
