LISTEN: Massive public support after monkeys poisoned in Umdloti

Animal lovers and the public at large have rallied together to raise around R40,000 as a reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for poisoning a troop of monkeys in Umdloti, north of Durban at the weekend.

Rescuers from Monkey Helpline were called on Saturday morning and found several monkeys gravely ill.

With the help of the community, they managed to round up 22 of the affected animals but at least seven managed to evade them.

Of those that were caught, 13 have died.

The remaining nine are currently being treated by a vet.

Monkey Helpline's Steve Smit says while they are devastated by what happened, they have been moved by the outpouring of support.

"We have had hundreds of messages of support and outpouring of anger and grief on the various posts that we have put on Facebook. It is impossible to answer them all. All we can do is thank everybody, our gratitude and absolute appreciation for what everyone has done. The help and support is hugely appreciated."
