Lack of housing sparks protests on M19
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A protest over housing has flared up on M19 near Reservoir Hills, west of Durban.
At this stage, it's understood that residents from a nearby informal settlement have blocked the road with burning debris.
The area's councillor, Alicia Kissoon, says the demand for land has been an ongoing issue.
Kissoon says residents have approached her for permission to build homes on municipal-owned land.
"I said I can't give you permission. You must go to housing. So they went to Housing, and Housing told them no. They had been trying to build for the last four days, and Housing kept coming and demolishing structures.
They have threatened that if their structures keep getting demolished, they will protest."

She says the protest action is a result of empty promises.
"These are human beings, and they need to make decisions for their own lives and by holding them in limbo all the time with these false promises - we have been doing it for years and the time has come for it to stop."
Authorities cautioned that the area was a no-go-zone on Wednesday morning.
