Mbali Frazer announced the KZN results at the Durban ICC on Friday.

"To the class of 2023, as we collectively applaud you on this memorable Friday. I want to take this opportunity and remind you that your success today is not just about the marks on a piece of paper, it is about the journey you travelled, the challenges you faced and the determination to overcome them."

Over 167 000 candidates in the province sat for the 2023 National Senior Certificate exams.

More 136 000 passed giving KZN a pass rate of 86.36%, the second highest in the country.

A total of 246 schools achieved a 100% pass rate.

Frazer says uMkhanyakude is the best performing district with 90%, with Ugu, Ilembe, Zululand and Harry Gwala rounding up the top five districts.

"At 6th place, we have Amajuba District with an 87% pass rate. Our sister district from eThekwini sit side by side and refuse to be separated. Umlazi take position eight, with an 86.1% while Pinetown followed with an 85.6%.

"Umgunglovu District recorded a pass rate of 85.06%,  followed by King Cetswayo District with 83.4% and Uthukela with 82.9 %.

Frazer said Umzinyathi is the most improved district by 7.5% to 86.59%

But the DA's provincial spokesperson for education says while the class of 2023 should be applauded for their achievements, the KZN pass rate is not a true reflection of the provincial results.

"And that is those learners who started in 2021 In grade 10 and ended in 2023 Matric. There has been an excessive number of people that dropped out. Close to 83 000 of learners have dropped out between this period," says Dr Imraan Keeka.

"And the real matric pass rate, considering the drop out including those learners that didn’t make it through the examination, the real matric pass rate is just over 54%."
