LISTEN: KZN woman tells of moment fire ripped through Bushman’s Nek resort
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
A KZN woman who was holidaying at a popular Underberg hotel has described the moment a raging wildfire tore through the establishment.
"The wind and the embers were tree-height coming over the roofs. That how big it was, it wasn't a little fire on the grass. People were just running in their pajamas getting into their cars,” Barbara Whiting told Newswatch.
She and her husband, who are both from Amanzimtoti south of Durban, were staying in one of the chalets.

The Bushman’s Nek Berg and Trout Resort was completely gutted after a runaway wildfire blazed through the area in southern Drakensberg last week.
Whiting said they watched the sky turn orange from the flames describing the valley as coming alive within minutes. She says they watched the flames destroy around eight log cabins before making their way to their chalet.
"We watched it until the embers and the wind were coming on absolutely horizontally onto our glass doors, and I said to my husband, ‘No, we got to go’. But we were very scared, we didn't know what to do."
