KZN woman gives birth to twins in emergency operation

A KZN doctor says his medical team had to act quickly to ensure the survival of a 23-year-old woman and her unborn twins when the woman arrived at a clinic in the town of Pomeroy - four weeks before full-term.

Nonjabulo Buthelezi had already been booked for admission at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg as a high-risk patient.
She was due to go in tomorrow for monitoring - ahead of her giving birth.
But Buthelezi was rushed to the Pomeroy Community Health Centre in labour on Wednesday evening.
Doctor, Sanele Madela and a team of nurses worked with what they had to deliver the baby boy and girl during an emergency operation.
"I know it's something that we do every day. Sometimes, we realise later that this could have been a disaster. When we were done, we realised that this was an important procedure. The mother was smiling and she was happy. We realised afterwards that this was a good thing that we had done," Madela said.

Buthelezi and her twins - whom she's named Siyabonga and Zenande were transferred to the Church of Scotland Hospital in Tugela Ferry - where baby Siyabonga is in a nursery due to his low birth weight.
