A 24-year-old taxi driver has begun serving a five-year prison sentence for his involvement in the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal last year.

The National Prosecution Authority says Lungelo Nthenga has admitted to ferrying people to the Mobeni business industrial area on south coast road in Durban to loot.
Provincial NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara says he was sentenced late last week by the Durban Regional Court after he pleaded guilty to three counts of theft.

"He was arrested when his vehicle was stopped at a roadblock during a stop and search operation conducted by the police in order to deter looting conduct.
"His vehicle was loaded with tinned fish, rice, as well as items from the surrounding warehouses that were looted.
"The NPA welcomes this outcome as it reaffirms the rule of law in our country."
