KZN students 'stand with victims of gender-based violence'
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
Hundreds of people have taken to the streets of Durban in a silent protest against women abuse.
Mangosuthu University of Technology, Durban University of Technology and UKZN have joined hands to organise the campaign in solidarity with rape survivors.
They are being supported by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation which says there is a link between the spread of HIV and gender-based violence.

DUT's Melusi Dlamini, who is involved in the campaign, explains why it was important to involve students in the protest.
"What we are wanting to do here is to represent the amount of people who are victims and who have been silenced by the stigma that continues to surround gender-based violence."
"We are also trying to produce the next generation of young and critical citizens in our country. Beyond that, we are more than aware of the scourge of gender-based violence in our country. This year alone has shown us the extent of the scourge," he says.
