KZN SAPS made nearly 12k arrests in March

Almost 12 000 alleged criminals were taken into custody during police operations across KwaZulu-Natal in March.

Provincial police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, says the highest number of arrests was for contact crimes like murder, attempted and robbery, where over 3 8000 suspects were nabbed.


He adds that over 2 700 people were taken into to custody for various cases of assault.


Meanwhile, 341 firearms and over 3 000 rounds of ammunition were also recovered.

"On drug related crimes, 1 599 suspects were arrested. Police visibility on the roads was maintained and 512 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and 41 people were arrested for reckless and negligent driving. 


"Stop and search operations resulted in the recovery of 791 dangerous weapons, of which 716 were knives."


Netshiunda says the operations will be stepped up this month, especially during the Easter weekend.
