KZN metered taxi drivers to march against Uber
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Metered taxi drivers in KwaZulu-Natal are up in arms over the presence of transport company Uber in the local market.
The KZN Meter Taxi Alliance is accusing Uber of operating in the country illegally claiming they do not pay taxes like other operators are required to do.
The alliance's Sizwe Mvube says Uber's rates are also cheaper affecting the metered taxi industry.
He says the alliance will march through Durban on Thursday.
"We are charging R12 a kilometre but they have gone down to R6.50 a kilometre lately. So, who can go down to R6.50 a kilometre? There are reasons why they have went down to R6.50 per kilometre because they are not suffering like us. They don't have cops involved in their business like us," he said.
Uber South Africa responded by saying the company is keen to offer its technology to metered taxi drivers to boost their user rate and chances of profit.
Spokesperson Samantha Allenberg says the two industries should rather focus on working together.
