KZN govt racks up R2bn in unpaid invoices

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government needs to fork out
over R2 billion to settle unpaid invoices.

The Public Service Commission says service providers have been waiting months to receive their payments.
The commission highlighted the challenge in its quarterly bulletin, The Pulse of the Public Service, focusing on the third quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.
The PSC's Anele Gxoyiya says there are more than 25 166 invoices in KZN, and all are older than 30 days, making the province one of the worst offenders.

He says some service providers are hesitant to complain due to the fear of being blacklisted.
" We continue to experience challenges related to the non-payment of service providers. The most common reasons provided by these departments vary from misfiled, misplaced, or unrecorded invoices to internal control deficiencies.
"All these are acts of misconduct, but there is no consequence management for those employees who misplace invoices or misfile."
