Karou Charou misses out on KZN legislature seat
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The only independent candidate who contested the elections in KZN believes he would have garnered twice as many votes if funding hadn't been an issue.
Thanasagren Moodley received 12,323 votes last week.
"We don't get any funding from the IEC or government. You are left on your own devices, and you can only manage to reach about 30% of my electorate. If I had much more funding, I could have reached my entire electorate. I think I could have reached more than 20,000 to 30,000 votes, but in the very short space of time, I think I done an amazing job."
Moodley, who is better known as Karou Charou, began campaigning in April.
He says even though he missed out on a legislative seat, he's pleased with the results.

Speaking about the future, Moodley says he plans to start his own political party so that he can contest the local government elections in 2026.
"Talks with various other stakeholders and political parties, but I as set out for my pre-election campaign, I am going to start my own political party and we are going to challenge for the 2026 local government elections and the 2029 national elections."
As an independent candidate, Moodley's results place him seventh on the results board, ahead of Action SA, which clinched 9,500 votes.
