Jeetendra Jaikissoon family 'in the dark' about murder accused's ill health
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The family of murder accused Jeetendra Jaikissoon claims they were left in the dark when the 39-year-old became ill in prison.
He was transferred from Westville Prison to hospital after he complained of chest pains and breathing difficulties last week but later died.
Jaikissoon was arrested along with brothers Ned and Dylan Govender, after more than 30 people were murdered in Phoenix during the unrest, in what was said to have been racially motivated attacks.
Community member and family representative Jonathan Annipen says his family's calling for an independent probe into his death.
"We were informed that Mr Jaikissoon had requested medical attention and he was denied that by prison staff.
"We were also further informed that the family were not told about the ill health of Mr Jaikissoon.
"They are questioning also whether he was in fact receiving treatment for his chronic illnesses because he was a diabetic."
The Department of Correctional Services is busy with its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
