iSimangaliso clean-up to generate 2,000 job opportunities in uMkhanyakude
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The iSimangaliso Wetlands Park says hundreds of locals in uMkhanyakude will financially benefit from a clean and green programme launched this week.
Around 2,000 people from neighbouring communities have been hired to be part of the Expanded Public Works Programme.
Among other things, they will need to keep streets clean, clear illegal dumpsites and maintain areas near the park.
iSimangaliso's Acting CEO Qhamukile Mntambo says local chiefs and community leaders helped them identify those in need of work.
"The DFFE [Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment] realised that more efforts are needed if the environment is to be protected from pollution and conceptualise a national cleaning and greening programme.
"The environmental protection infrastructure programmes and Isimangaliso Wetland Park Authority have identified the need to increase towards environmental promotion within the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park. As such, the department requested to collaborate with Isimangaliso to ensure that its mandate is achieved."
