The department's Kwazi Mthethwa says they're on-track to commence with the final matric examinations for 2016, with an official prayer meeting being held in Curries Fountain this morning - to pray for the 207000 matric candidates in the province.

KZN boasts the highest number of candidates writing nationally this year.

"A total of 171 480 full-time candidates will be writing matric exams for the first time, while 35 520 candidates - who wrote matric in 2015 and prior - will be rewriting the exams," he said.

The department is hoping to improve on the 2015 pass rate of 60.7% in KZN, by 10% this year.

Mthethwa could not comment on the actual number of examination scripts that were printed for KZN candidates, citing security issues as a reason. He added that additional security measures were in place to curb the opportunity for cheating in the exams.
