Infant, toddler die in Eshowe house fire
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
It has been a tragic and painful Easter for a north-coast mother who has lost two of her young children in a house fire.
Three-month old Masande Xaba and two-year-old Bandile were burnt beyond recognition when their rented one-room home in Sunnydale in uMlalazi Municipality caught fire on Thursday night.
Her other two children, five and seven-year-old Akhona and Anele, suffered first degree burns and are fighting for their lives in Ngewelezane Hospital in eMpangeni.
It is understood the woman had rushed to a local shop when the blaze started.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Mayor Queen Xulu has expressed her condolences and emphasised the need for caution by those caring for children.
"I'm deeply saddened by the loss of the young lives. The grief stricken face of their mother is unbearable," said Xulu.
The mayor paid a visit to the Xaba family on Saturday.
"I pray that the two surviving children recover sooner,” she said.
