Hunt for robbery suspect who fled deadly M13 shootout

Authorities are on the hunt for a suspected armed robber who managed to escape following a shootout between his group and police on Thursday.

The incident resulted in the death of two members of the group.
The drama unfolded on Thursday after the group of men stormed a business in the Estcourt CBD, making off with cellphones and cash in their getaway vehicle.

Police and security companies were alerted and received information that the suspects were heading towards Durban.
KZN police spokesperson Thenjisiwe Ngcobo says at around 7pm, the Phoenix Task Team spotted the vehicle along the M13 and gave chase.
"The suspects fled towards the St John's on-ramp where there was a shootout. Two suspects sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene. A 9mm pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition was found next to the deceased suspects.
"Police recovered a number of cellphones that were taken during the robbery in Estcourt."

She adds that an investigation has revealed that the firearm used in the crime was taken during a robbery in KwaMashu last month.
Charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession of stolen property are being investigated.
