Higher Education cracks down on bogus colleges in KZN
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Higher Education authorities are cracking down on unaccredited and bogus private colleges. Officials were in central Durban yesterday inspecting different colleges.
The Higher Education and Training Department’s head of registration for private colleges, Shahida Issack says some of the colleges were found to be non-compliant.
"We've been to Crane International Academy, it is not accredited with SASSETA to offer the national diploma and policing and the national certificate road traffic management," she says.
Issack says they've been to other colleges where they offer programmes not yet accredited or where they have submitted an application to the relevant quality councils and they are waiting for a response.

Issack says if these colleges fail to comply with the warnings, further legal steps will be taken against them.

Thobeka Khumalo says the news about these bogus colleges has left her very concerned.
"They are playing with the little money that we have, that we got from our parents. And it's January, no-one has money to waste"
Zanele Memela says she's not taking any chances and would rather go for a well-known institution.
"You definitely can't go wrong with that because they are well known, they have been around for a long time and you know they won't ab able to lie to you, because they have such a big reputation already."
