Govt warns over election-related offences

The government has warned that anyone caught vandalising political party posters, forcing people to vote and interfering with election officials could lead to prosecution.
The warning comes from the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster as South Africa prepares for elections on 29 May.
The Security Cluster held a briefing in Pretoria on Sunday on the state of readiness for the polls.
Defence Minister Thandi Modise said anyone who engages in criminal activity will be dealt with.

She said the Department of Justice, SAPS detectives, and the NPA have established a protocol to prioritise electoral fraud cases and other election-related offences.
"Political rights for citizens are guaranteed and should not be violated. The JCPS will ensure that all the rights enshrined in the constitution are not violated. The national disaster management centre has activated provincial disaster management teams to identify risks for any disaster that may occur before, during and post elections."
